Short grain runs parallel to the shorter sheet edge; long grain runs parallel to the longer edge. Plan the cut, fold and spine around the grain of the selected sheet. The formats have a predetermined grain direction. Check the grain for the selected code and the intended fold or spine; a size label alone does not describe the binding layout.
